Since W+K Tokyo Lab was launched in 2003, we’ve continued to produce CD+DVD releases for our artists Hifana, Takagi Masakatsu, Afra, and DJ Uppercut. Embracing the concept of hybrid, all our releases have been experiments in audio-visual expression and beyond, while striving to create a new experience that could only be born in Tokyo. Now that we’ve come 5 years along in this journey, this month we present our tenth release, a DVD+Book+Blog, called Tokyo.点, and to celebrate it, we’ll hold our biggest and best party at Liquidroom, featuring live performances by five of our artists. Come and share this experience with us as we kick off a new phase in the journey of W+K Tokyo Lab.

Tokyo.Ten Opening Party

Last Friday night, we all gathered at the recently reopened Claska Hotel and gallery space to celebrate the opening of the Tokyo.Ten exhibition, as well as the forthcoming release of the book+DVD. As you can see from the photos, this party was a blast, and we heard that around 700-800 people came through in the course of a few hours. DJing and live music was provided by our own Woog, Jemapur, Shingo (Merce Death), and UC / DJ Uppercut. The art exhibited is by Tokyo Lab and all our collaborators who graciously took part in this project just for the sheer love of creating something new and special together.

A big thanks to all who were involved in making this party happen (there were many volunteers from inside W+K Tokyo) and of course to all our creative collaborators who contributed their artworks. Without our collaborators and their work, there would be no book, no exhibition, and WKTLAB would not exist as it does today!
For those who didn’t make it to the party, you can still check the Tokyo.Ten exhibition which will be ongoing through 07.27 at Claska. The Process exhibition featuring personal works of +cruz, Woog, Shane Lester and Sun An will also go up at Claska starting this Saturday, 07.05–07.18.

Two distinct Tokyos exist for me. But it is its initial mark that has forever made an impression on me.
My first introduction to Tokyo was coupled with my launch into adolescence. Under the influence of pubescent energy and its unbridaled tendency for discovery, I navigated the spaces and shapes of both the city and the topography of my own self.
The aesthetic experience of being in Japan submerged my imagination with everything exquisite, from the garish colors and sounds of pachinko parlors to the placid nature and european city guide NHK programs set to classical music, from the perfect packaging at every purchase to the hyper-pure, cosmetic-only advertising and publishing industries. I grew with the swelling of the Bubble – unaware of the affluent economy and its emerging society ravaging the status quo of economic prowess, its own cultural integrity and sense of identity – until it burst, and I coincidentally left. And for nearly a decade I managed to maintain not merely nostalgia but a real archive of all that Tokyo had provided me with who I am and what I do. When I watch Marker’s Sans Soleil or Wender’s Tokyo-ga or read Barthe’s Empire of Signs, I feel they are my memories recorded.
I think if making something particular to Tokyo means returning to my original experience of it, then I will return to my original if not innocent and unguarded source of inspiration and expression: words.
